The Võru Museum (Võru County Museum) consists of a museum and an Art Gallery. We are part of Võro Institute and work as a research centre for the history of Võru County, we organize children programs and our exhibitions give an overview of the culture, history and art of the Võru region and beyond. Our collection gathers more than 60 000 items.
Exhibition
Our exhibition provides a deep overview of the history of the Võru County: it presents numerous rare archaeological artefacts since the Stone Ages, documents and historical items from the Middle Ages, developments in the Modern era and the history of 20th Century with a focus on culture, war and Forest Brothers in the 1940s-1950s.
You can also find an overview of the history of Võro Language that is a Finno-Ugric language different from Estonian and widely spoken in the Võro region. Our exhibition also offers an opportunity to learn about smoke sauna tradition in the Võru region, which has been recognised as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Our main exhibition is on the 3rd floor of the building. Unfortunately, it is not accessible via an elevator. Our exhibition has mostly Estonian and Russian texts, but we provide an audioguide in English, Estonian and Võro.
Art Gallery
Our art gallery offers a new exhibition in every two months, bringing the height of Estonian art scene to Võru. Our exhibitions present modern creators, Võru artists and occasionally overviews of older art connected to Võru area. The art gallery is located on the 2nd floor.
